James M. Hamid, Sr., a third generation Circus Producer, began his career working summers carrying huge tin letters used to advertise the current attractions on the electrical billboards of the world famous Steel Pier in Atlantic City, NJ.

After a stint in the U.S. Army and his graduation from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Hamid returned to the family amusement businesses, this time as Director of Public Relations and Advertising for the various Hamid holdings, including the Steel Pier, New Jersey State Fair and the Greensboro Agricultural Fair.

When Hamid’s grandfather, circus founder George A. Hamid, Sr., fell ill, James, Sr. was thrust into the role of Vice President and Production Manager of the big 3-ring extravaganza. Just like his father and grandfather, James, Sr. grew to love the circus.

“The Circus has adapted over the years to take advantage of the latest technology in lighting and sound,” says Hamid, “but the tried and true basics are still why people come to the show year after year. They want performing animals, clowns and spectacular aerial acts. The Circus is still bringing the same laughter, gasps and wonderment to the 21st Century as it did for the 19th and 20th Century patrons.”

Hamid also serves the industry in another capacity. As President of Circus Producers Association, he works with the other U.S. Producers in helping to insure that quality and honesty are integral ingredients to today’s circus productions. The Association also plays a key role in mediating disputes within the industry and is instrumental in maintaining insurance coverage for all performers.

James, Sr. is a member of Atlantic Lodge #221 F. & A.M., a member of Crescent and Murat Shrines, honorary member of Arab and Kalurah Shrines, a member of Circus Fans of America, the Circus Historical Society and the Outdoor Amusement Business Association.
